You’ve practiced for a couple weeks at home with your new training routine, and now your trainer recommends starting to take your dog out to dog-friendly areas close to home to start transferring these skills! This may seem scary at first but Sit Happens Dog Training Tampa wants to help ease you into the transition of public spaces. Start small, like a local neighborhood park, and work your way up to more challenging and populated areas.

Paul Sanders Park

By starting at a park, you can take training slow by practicing your outside recall. We recommend staying away from off-leash dog parks, you can never know what other dogs are going to do even if your dog is listening perfectly. With the long leash Sit Happens Tampa provided at your first lesson, let your dog wander into the grass and sniff, and before they get to the end of the leash, call them to you in a very excited voice! Make yourself the most important thing when you step outside. Once you feel like you have their attention, try the walking trails!

Brandon Parkway Trails

Once you’ve accomplished your first outing, it’s time to take it up a notch! Picking a park to visit that is in a more urban area will help desensitize to the sound of large trucks, cars, buses, and other loud city sounds. Walking along the pond, you can use natural occurring distractions like ducks and large birds. All of this helps balance your dog’s attention around anything that comes across your path.

Bass Pro Shop Brandon

Bass Pro Shop is a great place to take your dog once you’ve started getting more exposure to public areas! With lots of different sections, you can take it slow by starting off to the side and practicing small drills where there aren’t many people. Start making your way around the store as you feel more comfortable to do so; don’t forget to take your dog’s picture next to the giant fish tanks!

World of Beer Brandon

Every active dog owner loves the idea of taking their pup out to restaurants for a casual bite to eat with friends. Once your dog has proven to be able to settle in a down position for longer amounts of time, try taking them out to a spacious patio for some exposure training! Always check with the establishment online or over the phone, but most patios are welcoming to well-behaved dogs. World of Beer hosts great trivia nights and events, so it can get busy!
