The first thing every dog owner teaches their dog first is the most basic command, sit! Teaching your dog to sit on command can help them focus while taking away their ability to walk away. When your dog sits, it brings their head up and allows more eye contact for commands. Sit is also the command that helps shape other behaviors we want to teach, such as lay down, roll over, and shake! With these essential tips, Sit Happens Tampa can help you take your dog’s skills to the next level!

Use kibble/treats

Treats help shape behaviors we want to train, and everyone wants to be rewarded for doing something new! Using your dog’s kibble can help prevent unwanted stomach issues that come from feeding lots of fatty treats. Treats are great rewards but use sparingly!

Hold your palm open and facing up to the ceiling, and bend at the elbow

As you give the ‘sit’ command, hold your palm outward facing up to the ceiling. Place a treat in your palm to reward once your dog completes the command. Starting below your waist, raise your hand at your elbow up above your waist to promote the dog to follow your hand with their head. As their head goes up, the butt goes down!

Reward immediately when your dog’s butt hits the ground

Capturing the exact moment your dog completes the command is the most important part of teaching behaviors! Once you’ve positioned your hand with the treat correctly, ask your dog to sit. Once your dog’s butt hits the ground, immediately give the treat to your dog and praise!

Once you can repeat this command and your dog immediately sits, you’ve achieved your desired result! To further training with your dog, call Sit Happens Dog Training Tampa at 813-695-9430.
